"Kids may want to express what their father means to them in a non-conventional way."

Father’s Day is the best day to be a Dad. Help the kids in your life show their father that he is loved and appreciated by assisting them in creating a special gift for the occasion.

Popsicle Stick Business Card Holder
What you will need:
-Popsicle Sticks
-Elmer’s Glue
-Paint
-Any Decorations Desired

A business card holder made out of popsicle sticks sounds like a challenge, but it’s pretty easy. Starting with a narrow base of two popsicle sticks, glue those together. Create a short front of two popsicle sticks and taller back of three popsicle sticks. Elmer’s glue is surprisingly strong as long as it is held securely while drying. If you want to paint the popsicle sticks, it may be easier to do so before assembling them into the business card holder. Add decorations such as a golf tee, nuts and washers, or puzzle pieces if desired. Also rocks, shells, or bolts on the edges serves as a counter weight to a stack of business cards while providing a decorative touch as well.

Catch-All Pot
What you will need:
-Planting Pot
-Paint
-Cardboard Circle

A good way to keep clutter organized is with a catch-all container. A clever way to make one as a gift for dad is take a small pot for a plant and paint it. You will need to cut out a circle of cardboard to cover the drainage hole, but simply place it in the bottom and the problem is solved. This is a fun activity as the kids can get as creative as they want. When giving the gift to dad, the kids can explain it’s to keep things like keys, paper clips, etc. on his desk or at the entry way of the house. Practical but a lot of fun to make.

Dad “Rocks” Paperweight
What you will need:
-A Rock
-Paint

Another easy painting project is to make a paperweight for dad’s office. Cover the rock with a coat of paint and any decorative embellishments chosen. Then show dad how highly you think of him by painting a message of “You rock Dad!” or “Dad Rocks!” on the surface of the stone. This makes for a useful paperweight and a great way for dad to show off to everyone that his kid thinks he’s cool.

Father’s Day Collage
What you will need:
-Old Catalogs and Magazines
-Scissors
-Cardstock or Poster Board
-Glue
-Marker

Kids may want to express what their father means to them in a non-conventional way. Pictures convey thoughts and emotions in ways where words fall short. Do they think their dad is big and strong? They can cut out pictures of weights, trucks, and muscular guys to get the message across. Do they think their dad is smart? Pictures of books, globes, and space travel will make that statement. They can mix it all together into one collage if they wish or pick one theme for the focus. They can add words such as, “My Dad is fun,” to further express the meaning of the pictures chosen. The size of the collage can vary from a simple 8 x 10, a noticeable 11 x 14, or a large full sheet of poster board. Just be sure the kids add their name and the date either to the front or back so dad will always remember this father’s day through this personalized gift.

Out Fishing Sign
What you will need:
-Paper
-Markers
-Frame
-Computer Art Program with Clip Art (Optional)

Does your dad like to fish, hunt, golf, jog, or some other activity? Make him a gift he’ll appreciate that encourages him to pursue his interests while conveying the message to others that he’s busy having fun. With a “Gone Fishing” sign for work he can have fun either keeping it around as a reminder or using it to let people know when he’s away from work. Any sport will do, such as “Out Hunting,” “Rather be Golfing,” or “Be Back After my Run.” A kid can make this using paper, markers, and their own artistic abilities. Another option is to make it on a computer using an art program then printing the finished copy. Either way, it’s made into a very presentable gift when placed in a nice frame.

Getting Kids to Eat Healthy

It’s hard enough to eat healthy as an adult, but we all know it’s even harder to get kids to eat a nutritionally balanced diet. They tend to be picky, like the same foods over and over again, and for some odd reason kids instinctively hate vegetables, so healthy eating is a tough challenge for any parent.
