SuperHealthyKids.com is a website devoted to teaching families healthy eating habits. It’s definitely a challenge to get kids to eat healthy and even more of a challenge for parents to develop the necessary arsenal of recipes and techniques that make for good eating habits for the entire family. This website helps with recipes, tips, and real life experience as the blog follows Amy and her family as they try new recipes and ideas. Amy has a degree in Health Education and works part time for the Department of Health (more importantly being a full time mother of three). Her whole family strives to consume half of their diet in fruits and vegetables consuming mostly whole foods and avoiding processed foods as much as possible.
Healthy Habits Plate
Available through SuperHealthyKids.com is the Healthy Habits Plate, a nifty tool in teaching children how to eat a balanced diet. Kids learn visually. This sectioned plate with adorable cartoon drawings shows exactly how to best construct a healthy and balanced meal. All kids and parents can easily understand the instructions.
Product Review
I had a friend test out the Healthy Habits Plate on her four kids. Immediately the 3-year-old said, “It’s cute!” Her overall report said, “It is a hit! It handles the dishwasher, even with the heated dry cycle perfectly, even better than I expected. It sparks conversations about healthy eating, which I might not have initiated–fantastic! Further, if a meal is very lopsided, this is quickly and easily apparent as one stares at the empty section. It is a reminder to make healthy eating choices each time we see it.”
Her only concern was that the bread portion is small considering the USDA Food Pyramid guidelines state that even for children the amount of daily grain/bread servings are about equal to the daily servings of combined fruits and vegetables. However, Americans overall are not getting enough fruits and vegetables and getting kids to develop a love of fruits and vegetables in absolutely necessary to good health. As Joy Dubost, RD, PhD, Resident Registered Dietitian (Principal Nutritionist for Tropicana and PepsiCo) stated, “There’s no such thing as too much fruit.” Either way you look at it, it’s undeniable the healthy habits plate is a valuable tool in teaching children to increase their fruit and vegetable intake. Even if you just used the plate for one meal a day it would help your children learn what a healthy meal looks like.
As stated on SuperHealthyKids.com, “By 10 years old kids will have formed the dietary habits that they will most likely stick with throughout their lives.” This is why it is crucial to teach healthy eating habits at a young age.
