Weddings are beautiful ceremonies that evoke emotions you don’t experience too often in life. Unfortunately, weddings can also be a source of aggravation, frustration, and complete senility. When will you have your wedding? Who will be invited? Will you have a theme? What kind of invitations will you get? Many couples find wedding planning difficult because there is so much to do and so many things to buy — how will you afford to do everything you want to do? The wedding gown can be an extravagant purchase and can be one of the more expensive items that you buy for your wedding. Most of us don’t have an unlimited stream of income. We often have to sacrifice our dream wedding gown for something much more affordable and not as fantastic as the original choice. Well, ladies, there is hope. Think outside the box and perhaps look for a style that’s not so traditional and more modern — you’ll certainly surprise everyone. Or you can do what I did — the husband and I packed our bags for Las Vegas and I was draped in a simple, one-shoulder jersey dress in black and the husband’s attire was also all black. It was a fantastic and memorable wedding, but not for everyone.
Here are my picks for wedding gowns this season, most under $500:
For something sophisticated and incredibly affordable, go to Target and grab this fantastic sheath dress from Isaac Mizrahi. Made of sateen fabric that gives you that extra brilliance on your wedding day, the dress also has a georgette lining and fabric covered buttons along the back. Boning in the bodice creates a great shape. Don’t forget to get the sash, which is not included with the dress. Available only at Target, $89.99.
This Nicole Miller dress is simple and absolutely stunning. The bodice is ruched and the skirt has an A-line shape — a strapless gown that will look beautiful walking down the aisle in a church or on the beach. Available at Nordstrom, $179.90 (on sale).
Another non-traditional dress is this Grecian Jersey Dress from JS Boutique. Clean lines and an ultra sophisticated silhouette, this dress will make your groom do a double-take. If the dress is too understated for you, find someone to sew on some beading or rhinestones to add a little color and surprise to the dress. Available at Nordstrom, $81.90 (on sale).
This Tadashi Tiered Ruffle Silk Gown is a total gem. The short train and matching shawl is perfect for the sea of ivory layers that hug your body. Available at Nordstrom, $508 (limited sizes). Also available at Tadashi, $508 in Petal, Navy, and Black.
When I heard J. Crew had wedding gowns, I laughed. The same people that outfitted me in the famous Barn Jacket and numerous sweaters when I was in high school is doing couture-like dresses? No way. I was not laughing when I came across J. Crew’s bridal offerings like this Silk Tricotine Sophia Long Dress — I was in awe. This dress hearkens back to old Hollywood and is thoroughly glamorous. A shirred bust, empire waist, and simple detailing make this a modern take on the traditional wedding gown. Available at J. Crew, $295 (available in six other colors).
The halter style will definitely show off your shoulders. Silk rains down your body to create an uncomplicated look that will certainly put the spotlight only on you on your special day. Available at J. Crew, $395.
And if you happen to win the lottery or you just have oodles of money to spend, here are some couture gowns that will take everyone’s breath away:
From her Fall 2008 collection, this Vera Wang dress is modern and romantic. I adore the one shoulder detailing and the folds of fabric that seem to wrap around the body in an asymetrical form. For more information, visit Vera Wang.
Delicate scallop lacing abounds in this Carolina Herrera gown — totally feminine and original. For more information visit Carolina Herrera.
