This is a TotallyHer guest post from Char Polanosky.
The first day the kids get to stay home from school due to snow is usually the happiest day of their school year. They can’t wait to get on the snow clothes, haul out the sleds, build that snowman, and make snow angels. But what do you do when the snow day turns into snow DAYS and the kids start to get a serious case of the “I’m Boreds”?
Here are some ideas to help pass the time and increase the fun:
Have an indoor snowball fight. Take care of two activities at once — folding socks and having fun. Have the kids match up socks from the clean laundry pile and fold them into “balls”. Divide into teams and toss the “snowballs” at each other. Final task — toss snowballs into appropriate family member sock drawers.
Be creative with snowflakes! Forget making snowflakes using plain old paper. Fold white flour tortillas and use scissors, cookie cutters and other kitchen utensils to make fun snowflakes you can eat. How about the best mess-free snowflake creators? http://www.zefrank.com/snowflake/, http://snowflakes.barkleyus.com, http://www.popularfront.com/snowdays and http://www.noggin.com/games/snowflakemaker/.
Let the kids play with food. Make igloos or snowmen out of marshmallows. Stir up a batch of rice krispy treats and shape into snowmen, then decorate. Or make Coconut Snowballs!
Get out the crayons, scissors, and art supplies and be creative. Printables4Kids.com has free winter themed coloring pages and printable activities for kids of all ages. If you have an animal lover, Animal Jr. has cute penguin game kids can play online and even more winter themed printables.
Take a virtual ski trip with We Ski for the Wii, pop in Ice Age or Ice Age 2 for family movie fun, or have a family board game tournament.
Enjoy the chance to catch up on sleep and family time — summer will be here soon enough and you’ll be looking for ways to keep cool.
