One of the greatest benefits of owning an iPhone is the plethora of apps available for its users. From the strictly utilitarian to the purely eye candy, iPhone apps are as personal as they are plentiful. The following list consists of our picks for the 10 best iPhone apps for women. Take a look at our picks, and share your own in the comments below!
1. Tweetie
If you’re an active Twitter user (like we are here at TotallyHer), an iPhone Twitter app is a must-have. There’s more than one out there, so finding the one that’s right for you can prove a daunting task. Twitterific is a fan favorite for some, but many users are jumping on board the Tweetie bandwagon, including yours truly. Tweetie lets you handle multiple Twitter accounts (great if you have separate accounts for personal and business), and allows you to do pretty much everything that web-based Twitter allows you to do, from the convenience of your iPhone. Tweetie is $2.99 at the App Store.
2. Pandora Radio
If you’re always on the lookout for new music, and wish there was a way to find new stuff that’s similar to the artists you love, meet your new best friend. Pandora Internet Radio, available on the web as well as the iPhone, lets you create “radio stations” customized by selecting artists whose music you enjoy. If you’re a fan of Switchfoot, you can create a station based on them, and Pandora will automatically play their music as well as music from artists similar to them (based on the Music Genome Project). Along the way you can give individual songs a thumbs up or thumbs down, to let Pandora know that it’s on the right track or straying from the mark. You can also add new artists to your station to give it another set of characteristics to work with. Pandora for iPhone is free (ad supported) at the App Store.
3. Facebook
If being away from your home computer is the only thing keeping you off of Facebook, you may want to skip this one and pretend you never saw it. Getting the Facebook app for your iPhone means you can check your wall, use Facebook Chat, see friends’ photos (and upload your own), and more. If you simply must check your Facebook when you’re out and about, this is the way to do it. The Facebook app is free at the App Store.
4. Grocery Gadget
Looking for the ultimate grocery shopping list? Look no further than Grocery Gadget. Create shopping lists that you can save and edit, add item quantities, input prices to see how much your total cost will be when you check out, take pictures of items to remember exactly what they look like on future shopping trips (or for when you need someone else to pick up just the right item), and check items off as you pick them up (Grocery Gadgets will remember the order you check them off in, and automatically organize the list next time to show items in that order). Not only can this app serve as a neat shopping list, but showing you the total cost of what you’re planning to buy can help you stay within your budget, and showing items in order can help you save time. Can a pen-and-paper shopping list do that? Grocery Gadget is $2.99 at the App Store.
5. Nike Training Club
Nike developed the Training Club app for iPhone exclusively for women. You can set up a personalized workout program online and then access it from your iPhone. Whether you want to focus on cardio, strength training, flexibility, or balance, Nike Training Club helps you set up your customized program, including videos to show you just how to do new techniques. If you prefer to workout with friends, or to have some sort of competition to motivate you, you can coordinate workouts with friends and track each others’ progress. Nike Training Club is free at the App Store.
6. Midomi
Like Pandora, Midomi is an app that helps you discover new music. What Midomi brings to the table, though, is a whole different set of skills. Whereas Pandora attempts to introduce you to music you may have never heard of before, Midomi helps you find music you have heard, but don’t know who sang it or what it was called. It employs four methods for finding song information:
- Sing Search — Sing or hum part of the song into your iPhone’s speaker, and Midomi will try to guess what it is (this feature really does work, but of course it isn’t perfect).
- Say Search — Say the name of an artist or song title to find more of that artist’s music or to find out who sang a particular song.
- Type Search — Type the name of an artist or song title for a more accurate search than Say Search.
- Grab Search — Hold your iPhone up to a speaker and Midomi will search for the song that’s playing.
Midomi is free from the App Store.
7. Chanel
What does the iPhone have to do with fashion? Isn’t it all about technology? Well, fashion and technology come together with the Chanel iPhone App. You can get news, photos, videos, and product information from one of the biggest names in fashion. You can watch fashion shows, see the latest offerings from the Chanel line, access an RSS feed of Chanel’s news, and check a store locator if you just have to have whatever item you just saw. So far Chanel is the only fashion company to release an app like this, and there’s no news yet if others will follow. The Chanel iPhone App is free from the App Store.
8. Meebo
While not technically an app, Meebo‘s iPhone-friendly version definitely warrants a spot on the list. If you want a quick, convenient, and free way to cut down on SMS, you can use this program instead. Just access Meebo via Safari and input your AIM, Yahoo IM, MSN, Google Talk, Facebook Chat, and/or MySpace account info. Then you can IM straight from your iPhone! Talk to your friends on their phones or on their computers via your favorite Instant Messaging client. To get the iPhone version of the site, just go to www.meebo.com in your Safari browser.
9. ShapeWriter
If you get kind of annoyed at the “look, tap, look, tap” pattern of typing on your iPhone, you may want to give ShapeWriter a look. If you’re a nerd for any kind of new and interesting technology, you may also want to give ShapeWriter a look. Ok, there’s pretty much no reason why you shouldn’t want to give ShapeWriter a look — it’s just plain awesome. ShapeWriter is an innovative way to type on your iPhone, using natural sweeping motions instead of individual taps (check out this video demonstration). Currently, for iPhone, this app only works for email and notes, but hopefully it will be developed further and integrated into more areas. You can get ShapeWriter Free (with ads) or Shapewriter Pro (no adds, $9.99) from the App Store.
10. UrbanSpoon
“Where do you want to go?”
“It doesn’t matter. Where do you want to go?
“I don’t care — you pick.”
“No, you pick!”
This one has been called the “relationship saver”, and for good reason. If you and your significant other are having trouble deciding where to go out for a good meal, let UrbanSpoon decide for you. Just let it find your location, then lock in a particular area, price range, and/or food type, and let it roll. The slot machine-style random restaurant selector does the work for you. You can decide ahead of time to agree to whatever UrbanSpoon selects, or give yourselves the right to say no to two (or however many) restaurants each. You can also read restaurant reviews, see the restaurant’s location on Google Maps, and share restaurant opinions with friends. The only catch with this one is that it tends to work best in metropolitan areas, so in smaller towns it may be a little glitchy. UrbanSpoon is free at the App Store.

I know it’s not exactly an app “for girls”, but one of my favorites is Star Walk, which is a really cool stargazing app. It shows you the whole night sky, constellations, and lets you click on objects to get a closer look.

Why not try Igoshi?
It’s very simple – but will work for anyone anywhere when your language skills let you down. There’s even a section for kids.

That sounds interesting, especially if you’re going somewhere where you don’t speak the language. Must be new, though, because I haven’t seen any reviews for it.

CauseWorld allows you to donate to charities just for walking into a store (no need to purchase anything). You earn points for walking in then donate those points to real charities (like Haiti relief) for real money that sponsors have put up. Cool for kids and parents.

There is a cool game for girls called BFF Station. You can send messages directly to your friend’s phone via bluetooth. No need for texting. And you can also send a favorite colored heart with the message.
