"If you have an eclectic taste in music of rock, alternative, funk, and indie, you’re sure to love Tristan Clopet."

Perhaps you haven’t heard of Tristan Clopet until now. Indie artists often don’t get the recognition they deserve despite their monumental (yet often underground) success. Having gained fans in 57 countries this 23-year-old singer, song writer, and musician has found favor among music lovers looking for pure talent in its truest form: captivating live performance. His impressive display of vocal and musical abilities are captured in his latest album Purple.

My Opinion
Purple starts off with a powerful display of musical talent in “So Alive.” Tristan’s voice is soothing and strong, much like Michael Buble (though less Frank Sinatra than Michael comes off) or John Mayer (but more masculine than John). “So Alive” is undoubtedly my favorite song on the album. It’s musically enchanting, like entering a beautiful cove in a forest and you find yourself mesmerized by the babbling brook. The lyrics are inspiring; singing of a woman who needs to learn to love herself, as opposed to looking to a relationship for self validation. It’s a lovely anthem of self-discovery and self-esteem.

Then the album takes an unfavorable turn. “Proximity Bomb” is like listening to an angst ridden Lenny Kravitz. “Superficiality is a Sin” has the sound of a funk rock anthem but it’s disappointing that Tristan holds back his vocal talents opting to speak-sing through most of the song. “Ethereal Evidence” jumps into a Red Hot Chili Peppers style, which just isn’t my thing. Clearly these three songs didn’t hold my interest. They were such a departure from the first in style, vocal presentation, and lyrics.

On an upswing, “Love and a Question” moves back into the style of the first song, creating a dreamy and introspective experience. A mix of smooth jazz, Cold Play, and Six Pence None the Richer makes this song a hidden gem on the album.

Finishing up the musical journey, “Black Panther Party” sounds like a crazy mix up between Jason Mraz and Areosmith. But thanks to the party vibe I did like it more than the middle three rock attempts.

Overall, I found the album Purple to be a jumbled mix of style yet a clear demonstration of Tristan Clopet’s definite talent. He doesn’t limit himself to one genre and thereby doesn’t limit his artistic expression. However, the drawback is that those who are picky about their music listening are likely to pick and choose their favorites and neglect the rest of his work. Though, that is a fair option and provides the potential for Tristan to establish a broader fan base even if they only appreciate some of his work, not all of it.

If you have an eclectic taste in music of rock, alternative, funk, and indie, you’re sure to love Tristan Clopet. Check him out at TristanClopet.com where you can buy his album, learn more about Tristan, find show dates, read the latest Tristan Clopet news, and much more.
