The summer sun can dry your locks, leaving you with icky, fried hair after a day at the beach or pool. Beat the heat this summer with this list of handy tips to help your hair stay gorgeous.
Use Hair Products with SPF
While your hair can’t burn like your skin can, sun can and will wreak havoc on your locks. Fried strands are so not hot, so look for hair products containing SPF to help prevent sun damage.
Capri Sun-Shield Spray from Oscar Blandi ($20, Sephora) will add moisture and shine to parched locks. UV inhibitors will help protect color-treated hair from the sun’s damaging rays. Apply a light mist over the entire area before you hop in the pool or ocean and reapply as needed throughout the day.
For a cheaper alternative, try Phytoplage Protective Sun Veil ($8, Amazon.com), which promises to protect your hair from chlorine, salt water, and sun — made with sunflower extract, which acts as a filter to protect your hair from harsh rays. It also promises to restore moisture to dry, brittle hair.
For a DIY SPF hair care product, mix about 2 teaspoons of sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) with a cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray your damp hair prior to styling or heading out for the day. Reapply as needed, especially after swimming, for long-lasting protection.
Rinse your Hair
Chlorine and salt water can also dry and discolor your hair, so it’s important to protect your strands as much as possible from these effects. Before hopping in the pool or ocean, rinse your hair with cold water and rinse again immediately after getting out.
For extra protection, rub a dollop of conditioner through hair and distribute evenly with a wide-tooth comb before swimming. The conditioner will help lock in moisture and prevent chlorine and salt from sticking to your strands. After swimming, rinse with cold water for shiny, moisturized locks.
Healing Damage
If you’ve already spent too many un-protected hours in the sun, your hair will probably feel as brittle as straw. To correct this, use an intensive deep conditioner at least once a week. Try Burt’s Bees Hair Repair Shea and Grapefruit Deep Conditioner ($8.49, drugstores) to help restore shine and moisture to parched locks.
For daily maintenance, use a leave-in conditioner after shampooing and before hopping in a pool or salt water. Trust me, your locks will thank you!
If your hair looks particularly dull after a swim, use a clarifying shampoo or one formulated specifically to remove chlorine and salt water. A mixture of vinegar and water can also help strip away dulling agents in your hair — apply the mixture after shampooing for luscious locks you’ll love showing off.
Schedule regular trims every 3 months or so to maximize the health of your hair, as well.
